Fungi

Beard Lichen (Usnea hirta).
Phot. L. Krzysztofiak

The Wigry National Park world of fungi is equally rich. There are protected species here, like the common morel (Morchella esculenta, Morchella elata), the crested sparassis Sparassis crispa, the stinkhorn Phallus impudicus and lichens Usnea sp. The mushrooms growing on decaying trees (polypores) constitute a large group. We can mention here the pine polypore Phellinus pini or the Fomitopsis pinicola reaching huge sizes on dead spruces.

Edible Boletus (Boletus edulis). Phot. M. Kamiński

A lot of mushrooms are gathered as food, e.g. the edible boletus Boletus edulis, the chantarelle Cantharellus cibarius, the bay boletus Xerocomus badius.

The world of lichens is rich. There are species here, like the Vulpicida pinastri, Lobaria pulmonaria, Hypotrachyna revoluta, Cetraria islandica.
