Ethnographic Fishing Exhibition Wigry’s Militaries Sculpture Exhibition
NATURAL EXHIBITION “On Lake Wigry”
is located in the building of the park’s
headquarters in Krzywe. In the year 2005 the exhibition was thoroughly
renovated and modernised.
Many tourists, and most of school and organised groups coming to Wigry National Park visit the natural and cultural exhibition.
Entering the building you can see a diorama presenting beavers and
beaver lodge’s section with a panoramic photo of a forest lake in
the background. Next to it you can find a multimedia stand presenting
films about beavers, basic information about the park, photo galleries
and quizzes.
Works of winners of graphic and photographic contests are often exhibited in the hallway.
The exhibition consists of several parts: forest habitats, water
habitats, human presence (cultural values) and education. In the room
you can find trunks of tree species growing in the Augustowska Primeval
Forest and specimens of birds and mammals inhabiting it. In the middle
part of the room there is also an aquarium with native species of fish
and a showcase with specimens of fish. A diorama shows amphibians and
reptiles living in the park.
An “axis of time” presents the most important events which
have taken place in the area of lake Wigry from the withdrawal of
glacier to the present day.
The exhibition contains also educational games, one prepared for 2-5
year old children, other for older children and teenagers. There is
also a multimedia stand where you can find information about natural
and cultural values, exhibitions, tourist offer of the park, watch
films or check your knowledge. Every part of the exhibition is
accompanied by charts with illustrations and descriptions.
The exhibition is accommodated for handicapped persons and blind
persons as the charts contain texts in Braille alphabet. Blind persons
can also touch specimens of some animals as well as models of land form
and medieval stronghold.
In the exhibition room many educational classes take place. A
park’s worker shows visitors around, presents and describes the
exhibits. Scope and forms of education are usually negotiated with
teachers or organisers. According to participants’ interests
programme of visit can include multimedia presentations and nature film
screening in the adjoining conference room.
The exhibition is open on weekdays, 8.00-15.00, or at dates settled

ETHNOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION “Save from sinking into oblivion”
This permanent ethnographic exhibition in Krzywe
near the park’s headquarters presents about 800 exhibits –
examples of a passing material culture of the lake Wigry area. Almost
all of the exhibits are gifts from kind inhabitants of the park who
responded for an appeal of a contest “Save from sinking into
oblivion” and handed over many objects, often being family
keepsakes or valuable antiques.
The exhibition is located near forester’s lodge in Krzywe, in an
adapted farm building from 1920s. The exhibition has been open from
June 1, 2001. Seeing our collection can be the first steps to learning
about history of old professions, practised by inhabitants of this
region.
In the first room, called wozownia (coach house), you can see an old
coach, elements of a horse harness, chains for hobbling horses and
sleigh. There is also a quern in wooden frame.
In the next two rooms furnishings of a peasant’s cabin are
collected. There is a kitchen and festive room. Here you can see
various domestic appliances: earthenware ³achañki used for baking
cakes, different dishes: jugs, double pots, painted plates, churns
called bojki, big wooden vessels made from tree trunks, cast-iron pots,
pans, wooden pails, small pails, buckets, straw baskets, hand mangles
and wringers. A collection of tapestries adorns the kitchen.
In the festive room furnishing includes wardrobes, beds, szlabanki
(bench-chests used for sleeping), cradles, children’s bed and
very valuable loom-weaved coverlets (one from 1905) with original
patterns, tablecloths, doilies, embroidered and painted tapestries.
There are also “holy” pictures and a wooden cross, as well
as other paintings and portraits of people living in the area. An
important part of furnishing were chests and trunks, present in every
cabin. Other accessories include box charcoal irons and old sewing
machines. Very interesting are children’s toys: wooden rocking
horse, rattling birds and other.
The next exposition room is a working part, where you can see equipment
used for flax processing, carpenter’s workshop and tools: saw,
planers and chisels. There is also a saddler's bench and apiarian
workshop as well as many farmer’s tools: forks, hoes, flails,
rakes, scythes and sickles.
In the backyard you can see farming machines: winnowers, binders,
chaff-cutters, mills, threshing machines, treadmills, plows and harrows.

EXHIBITION “Wigry’s Militaries”
|
Archeological exposition and accompanying
photographic exhibition “Kopacze” (Diggers) by Tadeusz
Smagacz located in the park’s fishing base in Czerwony Folwark,
next to the exhibition “History and traditions of fishing on lake
Wigry”.
The exhibition was prepared by the Penetrator Archeological Club in
Suwalki. It presents some examples of the club’s finds and
private collections of its members, showing the tokens of the
region’s turbulent history. Here you can see elements of military
equipment of Polish and occupation armies found in our region: buckles,
bayonets, shells, guns and soldiers’ personal belongings. They
were dug in entrenchments left after military activities, dugouts,
bunkers and near soldiers’ burial places. The exhibition presents
also older objects, for example a battle axe from the times of
Yotvingians found in the village of Krzywe and a collection of Polish,
Prussian, Russian and German coins.
The exhibition is open daily in the summer season 8.00-20.00

Sculpture exhibition is located outside the
park’s headquarters in Krzywe. It was created thanks to artists
taking part in international open air granite sculpture workshops
Integrart during the years 1999-2002. Some of the works were handed
over to the park. In the workshops participated many artists from
different countries: Poland, Germany, France, Lithuania, Belarus, USA,
Japan.
“The organizers of the open-air event Integrart’99
appreciate the music of abstraction and that is why they did adopt any
artistic programme. They did not prefer any tradition, school,
direction, giving the participants freedom of expression.
These were very important for the organisers of Integrart’99:
mutual understanding between artists of many countries, friendly
atmosphere – full of mutual respect accompanying the work in this
beautiful and difficult local material – the granite.”
Andrzej Strumi³³o
You can see the exhibition from sunrise to sunset.
